Counterpulsation Therapy - Should we continue to use it?
The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a well-known, frequently used tool in interventional cardiology and has long been the first-line choice for mechanical circulatory support. Recent debate regarding the IABP has centered on the discrepant results obtained from randomized trials. The purpose of this session is to answer the question: Should we continue to use it?
The session will highlight the effect of counterpulsation on coronary perfusion with exhausted autoregulation; the effect of a larger volume (50cc) IAB on left ventricular unloading; and discuss real-world case studies in the complex coronary patient and patients with AMI complicated by persistent ischemia.
Clinical trial Data in IABP Therapy
Dr. Divaka Perera and Dr. Mark Cohen wrap up the 2015 Euro PCR and discuss intra-aortic balloon pumping and why we should continue to use it in 2015.
